Wi-Fi basically is any system that uses the 802.11 standard, which was developed by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Meaning that most laptops, phones and routers all use the 802.11 standard as long as it says Wi-Fi compatible. Each of these devices have a Wi-Fi network card that allows the device to connect wirelessly to a router. This wireless capability allows all of these devices to connect to the internet, or secured network without having to be on a specific computer. Wi-Fi is used in almost every device around the world today.
Wi-Fi has expanded the ability to send and receive information mainly through Hot Spots, and home wireless networks. Hot Spots allows users to connect to the Internet using a free wireless connection that is provided by schools, restaurants, and even gym's. These Hot Spots are usually unsecured meaning anyone can connect to the router and can get your information. Home wireless networks are more secure when the owner sets up a decent password. This allows only the people that you want to access your Wi-Fi connection.
