There a several types of image fomats for the web. Whether you are designing a web page or simply posting a photo picture or graphic art, using the correct image format will make your image display properly and effectively.
The .gif (Graphics Interchange Format) should be used for non-animated pictures like drawings or graphics because it is limited to 8-bits or 256 colors. The .jpg (Joint Photographic Group) format is used for photograph images. It is a compression format known a "lossy" that compresses the file so it does not take up a lot of disc space, but you do lose some quality of the image. The Windows .bmp format, does not compress the image and will use more space than a .jpg image. You won't lose quality of the digital image. The .png (Portable Network Graphic) image format supports 16 million collors. It was designed to work better than .gif and .jpg with various web browsers.
