Hotspots by Brent Wagner

A hotspot is a location that an access point will provide public wireless broadband network services to a piece of device through a WLAN. They typically use Wi-Fi technology and are connected to a link to an ISP (Internet Service Provider). You can find most hotspots in popular areas such as hotels, libraries, airports, convention centers, etc. Although anybody will be able to access theses hotspots they typically have a short range.
There are security concerns that could come along with hotspots. Some of these hotspots will authenticate users, but does not secure data transmission or prevent packet sniffers from allowing to see traffic on the network. Some hackers will set up a fake hotspot so they can access your information without you knowing. Some vendors will offer virtual private networks to secure the hotspots or download a WPA option. Wi-Fi alliance is working towards encryption that should be ready by 2012
